The Ferrari 458 Italia
The Ferrari 458 Italia continues to confirm itself with 30 international awards in its still young career. Now two more have been added to this collection at the “International Engine of the Year Awards”, where the car was awarded the “Best high-performance engine” and “Best engine with over four liters displacement”. The enormous success of the 458 Italia, both with the public and in the trade press, can be observed all over the world: from the USA to Europe to the Far East.
The architecture of the engine with a completely new concept was developed with the aim of achieving speeds of up to 9000 rpm. Such speeds were previously unknown in a street sports car with this cubic capacity. Further features are a compression ratio of 12.5: 1 and a maximum output of 570 hp, which gives a specific output of 127 hp / l.
This value is also unmatched in a street sports car with a naturally aspirated engine. The excellent drive torque values are reflected in a broad usable range and a spontaneous response behavior of the vehicle in all speed ranges, with a torque of 540 Nm at 6000 rpm (the specific torque is 120 Nm / l - another record), which is already at 3250 revolutions is 80% available.
The front consists entirely of an aerodynamic "mouth" on which there are two large side air inlets for cooling the engine fluids. The middle section has partitions and profiles designed to direct the air to the radiators and the underbody. This flows through the lower part of the bumper and the column in the middle. The two wings anchored to the central part help to increase efficiency or reduce drag at high speed.
The position of the cooler provided for cooling the transmission and clutch oil was chosen with the aim of creating a "base bleed" effect. That is, a puff of air in the vehicle's wake, which increases the base pressure and consequently reduces the drag. The chassis was made modular and has a completely innovative shape.
The use of new alloys together with aluminum, the highly resistant aluminum extrusions from space technology as well as particularly innovative processes such as heat forming, structural shaping through temperature, serve to reduce weight and optimize the performance of the vehicle. The result is a chassis with greater rigidity, both in terms of torsional rigidity (+ 15% compared to the F430) and in terms of flexural strength (+ 5% compared to the F430).
The vehicle offered here is an exclusive one-off piece, which was extensively individualized by the Ferrari Tailor Made program in honor of Niki Lauda. The design of the vehicle is based on the legendary Formula 1 racing car Ferrari 312T, which was piloted by Niki Lauda at the time.
