Every decade, Ferrari astonishes the world with a cutting-edge, limited-production supercar that not only shatters records but also enhances the marque's identity and desirability. Their latest masterpiece, a tribute to Ferrari's prowess, was named the LaFerrari. Unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show as the "definitive" Ferrari, the LaFerrari showcased the engineering and design prowess of Maranello. Internally referred to as the F150, it was developed based on findings from testing the FXX developmental prototype. Ferrari's first modern proprietary design and its first hybrid road car, its atmospheric V12, paired with an HY-KERS system, produces an astounding 963 hp and a combined torque of 900 Nm. The powerplant impresses not only with its performance or high-revving nature but also, and especially, with the sound it produces.
Without a doubt, it's one of the best-sounding modern cars and a true feat in terms of emotions and sensations. Only 500 LaFerrari coupes were built, an extremely low production number in today's world of "mass-produced" super and hypercars. It is undeniably an absolute masterpiece from Maranello and an extremely desirable addition to any Ferrari collection. Ferrari received an overwhelming demand from its customers for an open version of the LaFerrari coupe. Thus, Ferrari engineers quickly began devising a way to satisfy the high-end Ferrari clientele, and by the end of LaFerrari production in 2016, the timing was perfect for a special 70th-anniversary model in the tradition of the F40 and F50. This design brief marked the birth of the LaFerrari Aperta, and the only qualification to order one of these rare specimens was to already own a standard LaFerrari, ensuring the Apertas remained limited to a proven handful of loyal purists.
The Aperta's body was redesigned without a roof section, which could be covered with a canvas soft top or an optional carbon hardtop. A multitude of improvements to the Aperta included remapped engine management electronics for a smoother power curve, a reinforced chassis for improved stiffness, radiators repositioned to reduce warm air towards the cabin, an extended front splitter to enhance nose downforce, and accompanying modified wheel arches.
By the time the LaFerrari Aperta was officially unveiled at the 2016 Paris Salon, all 200 units had already been pre-sold, ensuring a rarity level that most previous Ferrari hypercars never quite achieved. Additionally, nine pre-production units were built, most of which served the manufacturer during the celebratory events for the 70th anniversary. In addition to a final extra car built for a charity auction held by RM Sotheby's, the total production amounted to 210 units, and the results of this short production run were unanimously excellent. Ferrari could once again claim to have achieved the impossible: making a perfect product even better.
