The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722
Pure racing attributes characterize the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition, which was developed in close contact with motorsport at the headquarters of the English Formula 1 forge McLaren. The super sports car, which has been modified in more than 300 parts, is capable of inspiring even the most demanding automotive enthusiasts with its higher performance, more dynamic suspension tuning, improved aerodynamics and emphatically sporty interior. The name is a commitment: with the new SLR 722 Edition model variant, Mercedes-Benz is commemorating the unforgettable victory in the Italian endurance classic Mille Miglia, which was won in 1955 by British racing legend Stirling Moss and his co-driver Dennis Jenkinson in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with the starting number 722 (for the starting time at 7:22 a.m.). The new SLR McLaren 722 Edition super sports car, with 478 kW/ 650 hp output, not only surpasses its historic forefather, but also the already outstanding top driving performance of the SLR. The SLR 722 Edition thus satisfies the wishes of the most discerning customers for even greater sportiness while retaining the same high level of everyday practicality. Strictly limited to 150 units, the small series is largely hand-built at McLaren in Woking. The heart of the SLR 722 Edition is the 5.5-liter V8 supercharged engine, which is assembled by hand at the Mercedes-AMG engine factory in Affalterbach in accordance with the "one man, one engine" principle. The particular strengths of the high-performance engine are its extremely spontaneous response to accelerator pedal movements, powerful torque build-up across the entire rev curve and the unmistakable V8 sound. The interaction between the engine and the gearshift has also been adapted: for the individually preselectable transmission programs M ("Manual") and S ("Sport") on the one hand and C ("Comfort") on the other, a different accelerator pedal characteristic curve is now available in each case, which is optimally matched to the various operating conditions. The SLR 722 Edition accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in a breathtaking 3.6 seconds (SLR 3.8), reaches 200 km/h in just 10.2 seconds (SLR 10.6) and 300 km/h in just 28.0 seconds (SLR 28.8). The top speed of 337 km/h is also higher than the previous SLR (334 km/h). A decisive factor in the further improved performance of the SLR 722 Edition is the new chassis set-up. The starting point for the development activities at McLaren's Formula 1 site was the existing setup of the proven SLR aluminum chassis. In a first step, various chassis parameters, such as suspension and damping, went through test programs on the Formula 1 test bed in Woking. Further refinement and finalization of the new set-up then took place on the road and above all on the racetrack. The tighter spring rates and shock absorber characteristics of the suspension (body lowered by 10 mm at the front and rear) ensure the increased driving stability of the SLR 722 Edition and at the same time noticeably improve the driving dynamics. In curves, body roll is reduced by more than 20 percent, enabling the higher cornering speeds of the new SLR 722 Edition.The new 19-inch forged aluminum wheels also improve the driving dynamics of the new model - and reinforce the racing reference with their unique design and palladium gray color scheme. Their lighter weight compared with conventional wheels reduces unsprung mass, which makes the response of the SLR 722 Edition even more direct. In addition, the 19-inch wheels allow larger brake discs with a diameter of 390 mm to be fitted on the front axle. The new brake system from the Italian manufacturer "Brembo", together with the carbon-fiber-reinforced ceramic discs, achieves impressive deceleration values that are perfectly in line with the particularly high performance capability of the SLR 722 Edition. A new ESP® control system has been developed for this new brake configuration with the aid of elaborate test cycles.
