Racing engine lineage

The 4,593 cc naturally aspirated V8 derives from the architecture of the RS Spyder endurance-racing engine. Porsche increased its stroke while retaining a 95 mm bore; the road-car engine revs to 9,200 rpm.

Hybrid axle layout

One electric motor works with the V8 at the rear axle through 7-speed PDK. A second motor drives the front axle independently, with a clutch that can disconnect it; this arrangement gives the 918 electric all-wheel drive.

Battery and production

The plug-in hybrid system uses a liquid-cooled 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. Porsche built 918 cars at Zuffenhausen between September 2013 and June 2015.

Weissach distinction

The optional Weissach Package combined magnesium wheels, an extended rear diffuser and additional carbon-fiber parts with changes to interior materials. A 918 Spyder designation alone does not establish that this package was ordered.
