DESCRIPTION
In 1953, at the Paris Salon, Ferrari introduced a new sports-racing model called the 250 Mille Miglia. Riding a shorter 2,400 mm chassis, the 250-based privateer car was assigned even-numbered racing chassis numbers and produced in a smattering quantity of 31 examples through mid-1953. Eighteen of the cars wore influential new fastback coachwork by Pinin Farina that was clearly a precursor to the carrozzeria’s designs for the upcoming 250 GT berlinettas, while the other 13 examples were bodied by Vignale (all but one of them as spyders). Of these 12 Vignale Spyders built for the 250 MM chassis, 10 were fashioned in an updated “Series II” style.
Although Ferrari was experimenting with Lampredi engines during this period, the 250 MM was powered by a 3.0L V-12 designed by Gioacchino Colombo. Essentially a Colombo block with Lampredi-style heads, the 250 MM engine featured individual porting, hairpin valve springs, and four-choke Weber carburettors. It produced approximately 240 bhp at 7,200 rpm, with the benefit of being smaller, lighter, and easier to maintain than a Lampredi engine.
The 250 MM made its competition debut at the 1953 Giro di Sicilia and quickly earned a reputation as a winner. That April, Phil Hill won the Pebble Beach Road Races in his first outing with a 250 MM Spyder. In June, Luigi Villoressi drove a 250 MM Berlinetta to victory at Monza and the following month Paolo Marzotto won the Coppa d’Oro della Dolomiti with a 250 MM Spyder.
The car we are thrilled to offer for sale is chassis 0288MM and is one of the 10 cars that received the updated “Series II” body style by Carrozzeria Vignale in Torino. It was produced in 1953 and was used in several races that year as a Scuderia Ferrari works racer, most notably the Mille Miglia where legendary driver Mike Hawthorn and Azelio Cappi campaigned the car under race number #625. Its best result under Scuderia Ferrari was the 1953 West Essex Car Club Race at Snetterton where Bobbie Baird drove the car to 2nd overall. In June, 1953, the car was sold to a Joao Gaspar of Porto, Portugal and used in a couple of further races throughout Portugal before being exported to South America the following year.
The car returned to Europe in the 1970s and has been cherished by a small handful of Ferrari afficionados since. Since the 1980s, 0288MM has been very active throughout the historic scene, regularly entering Concours events and road rallies across the world. It is unquestionably a Mille Miglia Storica favourite, competing in the event six times since 2004.
This breath taking 250 MM Vignale Spyder sits today in wonderful condition and maintains an extensive history file with a vast number of historical photographs, race results, and a copy of the original build sheets. The car has also been documented by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini and has a current FIVA Identity Card valid until 2030.
