Model history · Porsche 911

Eight generations of the Porsche 911 run from the original 901 to the 992. The model was presented in 1963 and series production began in September 1964. The 993 was the last air-cooled generation; the 996 introduced water cooling.

Chassis

Eleven generations since September 1964, each known by its internal code: 901, G-series, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991 and 992. The flat-six has always sat behind the rear axle. The 993 of 1994 to 1998 was the last air-cooled 911; the 996 brought water cooling in 1998, after thirty-4 years.

992 introduction

The 8th Generation 911 was unveiled in Los Angeles on November 27, 2018. Its wider rear body, flush electric door handles and continuous rear light strip distinguish the 992 design from the preceding 991.

Carrera and GT3 architectures

The launch Carrera S and 4S use a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six. The GT3 branch uses a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six, so the Carrera engine and transmission specifications do not describe the entire 992 range.

Body-style development

Carrera S and 4S coupes appeared first, followed by their cabriolets in January 2019. Porsche presented the 992 Targa in May 2020, retaining the broad roof bar and electrically operated roof mechanism.
