Description of the car:
The Ford GT40 legacy is a story that follows a 50+ year timeline. The original Ford
GT40s were built to break Ferraris seemingly unshakable grip on the 24 Hours
of Le Mans. The quest was a personal one after Enzo Ferrari insulted Henry Ford
II and laughed at an American chance in the worlds premiere automobile
competition. Ford was determined and in 1966, after a no expense spared
program they took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at Le Mans justly proving that Ford,
an American manufacturer, could run with the European contenders (Ferrari)
and beat them. The winning drivers were Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon
followed by Ken Miles all motor racing legends. The Ford GT40 would continue
to dominate Le Mans for the next 3 years. The story was so compelling that in
2019 it was retold on the big screen as Ford vs Ferrari staring Christian Bale,
Matt Damon, Josh Lucas and Catriona Balfe. The movie received raves reviews
and was one of the biggest box office hits that year.
Fast forward to the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, and the all-new Gen 2.0 Ford GT
was revealed to the automotive world. Ford was at it again, later announcing
that is 2016 they intended to go back to Lemans and beat Ferrari again 50
years after their historic accomplishment.
Fords plan (and full intent) was to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016. There
was no holding back, no compromises, just sheer determination to win the
legendary race 50 years after the first Ford GT40 crossed the finish line. The new
Ford GT race cars were built from blank sheets of paper, a clean slate.
Fords mount was driven by none other than Joey Hand, Dirk Mller and
Sbastian Bourdais. In the race, despite having some technical issues in the early
morning and a penalty, in the last four hours of the race Hand managed to chase
down the Ferrari with a 12-second lead, later making the definitive pass that the
Ford Team would retain for the remainder of the race.
Much like the fateful race at Le Mans over 50 years ago with Fords triumph over
Ferrari, Fords GT would go on to take 1st at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016
beating by one place the Ferrari 488GTE of Giancarlo Fisichella, Mateo Maurelli
and Tony Viander.
The win sealed the Ford GT in legend just as its predecessor had done in 1966.
The new Ford GT road car application process saw a flooding of applicants who
wanted to get their hands on one of the new cars, despite only 1,000 being
announced to be built initially. With over 8,000 applications in the first week,
many went home empty handed only to dream what it would be like to own
