GT1 development
For the 1997 FIA GT rules, McLaren developed new Longtail bodywork around the F1’s carbon monocoque. A longer nose and tail, a larger rear wing and wider arches increased aerodynamic downforce.
Race drivetrain
The BMW V12 was reduced to 5,990 cc through a shorter stroke, while a 6-speed Xtrac sequential gearbox replaced the earlier transmission. Ten 1997 GTRs were built, separately from the three F1 GT road homologation cars.
