Upon its release in 2016, The 911 R was the darling amongst driving enthusiasts and journalists alike, winning pretty much every magazine award going. With its fabulous manual gearbox, clever aerodynamics including a new diffuser to compensate for the lack of rear wing and the 4.0 litre naturally aspirated flat six lifted straight from the GT3 RS; the 911 R is one of the purest and most emotive modern 911s on the market.
The 911 R boasts some unique features which set it apart from its other 911 siblings, including carbon fibre front wings, 4.5kg of sound insulation that has been stripped, carbon ceramic brakes which come as standard, rear wheel steering and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

Chassis
Eleven generations since September 1964, each known by its internal code: 901, G-series, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991 and 992. The flat-six has always sat behind the rear axle. The 993 of 1994 to 1998 was the last air-cooled 911; the 996 brought water cooling in 1998, after thirty-4 years.
Model background · Porsche 911, 991 generation
New 911 platform
Unveiled at Frankfurt in September 2011, the 991 introduced a new platform for the 7th Generation 911. Its 2,450 mm Carrera wheelbase is 100 mm longer than the 997, with a new transaxle arrangement repositioning the rear axle relative to the engine.
Mixed-material structure
Porsche combined high-strength steel, aluminum and composites in the 991 structure. The platform supported coupe, cabriolet, Targa and later Speedster bodies, alongside distinct Carrera, Turbo and GT derivatives.
Production series
The final 991 left production on December 20, 2019. Porsche built 233,540 examples across the generation; that figure covers the whole 991 range rather than an individual limited edition.
