The BN4 is based on the Austin-Healey 100: a steel frame with the body welded to it, independent front suspension by wishbones and coil springs, and a rigid rear axle on leaf springs with a Panhard rod. That axle runs above the frame, which limits wheel travel and ground clearance but keeps the car very low. It weighs 1,092 kg. Unlike the two-seat 100, the BN4 is a 2+2: wheelbase and overall length grew by 50 mm to make room for the extra seats, to 2,337 mm and 4,001 mm. It is recognised by the oval grille modelled on that of the 100S and by the air scoop in the bonnet, needed because the longer engine pushed the radiator forward.
The 100/6 replaced the four-cylinder 100 in 1956 and made way for the Austin-Healey 3000 in 1959. Production moved in 1957 from Longbridge to the MG plant at Abingdon: 7,053 BN4s were built at Longbridge and 4,241 at Abingdon, beside 4,150 examples of the two-seat BN6 that joined the range.
The available examples are all from the 1959 model year.
