The car is built on a tubular steel frame with a separate body, the platform it shares with the 308 GTB. Suspension is independent all round, with double wishbones, coaxial coil springs, hydraulic dampers and anti-roll bars on both axles; the rack and pinion steering is unassisted and all four brakes are vented discs. Leonardo Fioravanti drew the shape at Pininfarina. The GTB is the fixed-roof berlinetta, while the GTS stows its grained satin black targa panel behind the seats. The wheelbase is 2,340 mm, shorter than that of the 2+2 GT4 built on the same tube platform.
The two-litre 208 existed for the Italian market, where a new car above two litres paid 38 per cent value added tax instead of 18. Its engine is one of the smallest V8s ever built, the 208 GTB was built in 140 examples in 1980 and 1981, and the turbocharged 208 that followed in 1982 is a different car.
The available examples are all from the 1981 model year.
