Harold Beach developed the Volante on the coupé's steel platform chassis, reinforced for the open body, and George Mosely, who had drawn the Rolls-Royce Corniche hood, designed its folding roof. Launched in June 1978, it previewed the closed bonnet bulge and wood-trimmed dashboard of the Series 4 Oscar India coupé. The Series 1 Volante was built from 1978 to 1985, almost always with the automatic, and the first manual Volante followed only in 1983.
Every V8 was built by hand at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, and by 1981 the success of the Volante meant the coupé was built only on individual demand.
The available examples are all from the 1979 model year.
